L, a young girl living with physical disabilities and multiple health needs, required constant care, including oxygen support and catheterisation, which significantly affected her ability to attend school and participate in everyday activities. When L started school at Cheltenham, her mother had to be present during school hours because the staff could not meet her complex care needs, disrupting the family’s routine and limiting L’s independence. From January to June 2023, Nurseline Community Services provided a dedicated Registered General Nurse (RGN) who supported L throughout her school day.
This case study illustrates the profound impact that specialised, compassionate care can have on a young person requiring support, demonstrating the importance of tailored support in promoting a fulfilling and independent life.
This specialised nursing intervention enabled L to attend school full-time and participate in activities she previously could not join, such as swimming, which significantly enhanced her social and educational experiences. The presence of the RGN also led to a dramatic reduction in emergency hospital admissions by effectively managing L’s health needs and preventing crises. As a result, L’s overall well-being and independence improved, allowing her mother to return to work and care for her younger brother, which brought a sense of normalcy and balance back to their family life.
