Living Beyond Diagnosis: Complex Physical Care in the Community

“Karen is an incredibly inspirational person, and working alongside her has been truly eye-opening. Her compassion, empathy, and positive outlook are nothing short of amazing. I genuinely cherish the time we spend together.”

Kallie Marsh | Care Coordinator

Meeting Karen

Meeting Karen was one of the most warming and inspiring experiences we have had. Her positive, bubbly, and endlessly chatty personality is a genuine refreshment and a source of inspiration for the entire team.

Karen enjoys conversation, values connection, and has a natural ability to put people at ease. She is a true animal lover, which only reinforces the warmth and kindness of her nature.

Some of the most important people – and companions – in Karen’s life include her brother, her support team, and Ollie, her beloved cat. Karen also has a wide network of friends across the world, many of whom remain in regular contact and visit when they can. These relationships are deeply valued and play an important role in her emotional well-being.

Life Before Nurseline Community Services Was Involved

Before Nurseline Community Services became involved, Karen had lived independently for many years. As her health needs increased, everyday life became more physically demanding and difficult to manage safely.

Support at this stage came from Personal Assistants, providing help while Karen continued to maintain as much independence as possible. Over time, it became clear that more structured and coordinated support was needed – not to change Karen’s life, but to help her continue living it safely and with dignity.

Community Support - Working Together

Karen’s current support includes:

  • Moved into the care of Nurseline Community Services in December 2024
  • Supported within Catalyst services for a total of 4 years
  • Supported on a 1:1 basis
  • Support provided by NCS staff and Personal Assistants
Staff supporting Karen are trained in:
  • Manual handling (theory and practical)
  • Medication administration
  • Epilepsy training
  • Suppository administration
  • Blood pressure monitoring

Therapeutic, Multidisciplinary Approach

Karen’s support is complemented by therapy involvement when it is helpful and needed, always with her comfort and wishes in mind. Speech and Language Therapy has been involved in supporting her swallowing needs, helping to make everyday moments, such as eating and drinking, feel safer and less worrisome. Occupational Therapy has also played a role, offering practical input to support daily living and make everyday activities feel more manageable.

Clinical oversight is available whenever needed, providing reassurance and guidance behind the scenes. At the same time, Karen’s day-to-day life is not shaped by constant clinical intervention. Instead, support focuses on living well – enjoying routine, connection, creativity, and the relationships that matter most to her.

Karen’s Interests, Daily Life, and Activities

Karen leads a socially rich and engaging life by spending time on the things that bring her comfort, enjoyment, and a sense of connection. She loves arts and crafts, enjoys watching films, and, above all, values socialising and having a good chat with the people around her.

Karen regularly attends the MS Centre, where she participates in physiotherapy sessions that support her physical well-being. She also visits Paul’s Place, a space where she can meet friends, catch up, laugh, and let her creative side shine. These familiar routines offer more than activities – they provide structure, enjoyment, and a strong sense of belonging in her everyday life.

Goals and Progress

Karen continues to look ahead, with aspirations shaped around comfort, mobility, and quality of life. A current goal is to attend hydrotherapy sessions, which the team is actively working towards with her.

Since being supported by NCS, Karen has already made meaningful progress, including introducing a worry and mood journal and installing a winch in her mobility vehicle to support safer transfers. These changes may appear small, but they make a real difference to Karen’s everyday life.

Karen Today

Today, Karen lives in the community with personalised, 1:1 support, surrounded by people who know her well and understand what matters to her.

She remains actively involved in decisions about her care, supported to maintain independence where possible, and respected for who she is beyond her health needs. Her life continues to be shaped by connection, creativity, and the relationships that mean the most to her.
