‘’I joined the company in 2019 and have been working with Nurseline Community Services for six years. Through the years and experience, I have learned to be patient and courageous and have always put myself in people’s shoes to get to know how they feel.’’
“Every person we care for teaches us something new. With each experience, we listen, learn, and grow because support isn’t just about what we know but how we adapt and walk alongside someone on their journey.”

Meet Sylvester Ozua
Since joining NCS six years ago, Sylvester has supported people from a wide range of backgrounds, bringing care, empathy, and consistency to each experience. His role goes beyond assisting with daily tasks, and it’s about helping people live more fulfilled and connected lives.
One of the most memorable moments in his care journey took place early on, during just his fourth shift, when he supported a young man with a learning disability who also used a wheelchair. The care plan detailed that the young man enjoyed going out, especially to the park, but Sylvester soon learned that the young person hadn’t left the facility in nearly a month.
Seeing an opportunity to make a difference, Sylvester arranged for transport and accompanied him to a nearby park. The outing was small but significant. They shared a picnic, and the young man beamed with joy throughout.
The experience taught him a valuable lesson when it comes to supporting people and being a caring support worker. He learned that it takes courage, patience and kindness to support people in the way they need it, and that being an active listener is one of the key characteristics a support worker needs to possess.
Alongside his commitment to others, Sylvester understands the importance of taking care of himself. “You have to be kind to yourself,” he often says. “You have to take care of yourself first.” For him, self-care means staying physically and connected to his close relationships with family and friends.
